Why do I have to fly home…or anywhere for that matter?
Today at work I completely freaked when I thought about having to fly home. I found myself on the Flying without Fear website reading things like..”turbulence is uncomfortable, not dangerous”…just a couple affirmations to go along with Xanax cocktails! Also for the next month I will implement my very own action plan. Here is what Flying without Fear suggests:
Action Plan and Strategy
Here are some ideas for you to develop your own action plan or strategy
What you must do to overcome your fear of flying.
- Have an objective, aim or defined outcome to work towards. humm, well that would be to get home, and then the other various places I find myself in.
- Clear your mind of myths doubts and mis-understandings by gaining knowledge. just bring a parachute or remember that its just 40 more secs and then it’s over.
- Ask questions. to whom? god? “jesus, lord…you gon let me live”?
- Develop and practice thought stopping techniques. Yea, this does not happen.
- Develop and practice muscle relaxation techniques. This is where the meds come in. Tried it by myself on the flight from Bangkok to Seoul and ended up strapped into the flight attendants seat, having a complete meltdown.
- Expose yourself gradually to the things you fear. Have you seen the freaks I work with? I have maximum exposure.
- Learn to accept some level of anxiety. This is about the only one I can say I have accomplished.
- Find support. Chopin.
- Keep a progress report of your achievements. buckle the seat belt, check. order a whiskey, check. make sure vomit bag is in place, check. adult diaper, check.
